A week on the waves

Amid our rock climbing adventures and exploring the country, we booked ourselves onto a five-day surfing course in Asturias, in the north of Spain, near a town called Llanes. The campsite we chose was in a tiny village called Poo. We still chuckle at the memory.

The reason we chose north, is to run away from the heat that has enveloped the country. I read somewhere that Spain is on shut-down in August, as it's too hot to do anything. Asturias is a region tucked in between the mountains of the Picos de Europa National Park and the sea, which proved to be pleasantly fresh and cool. However, for around half the week that we were there it was raining! No wonder this part of Spain is so green. It was a nice change of scenery, and was nice to finally cool down. However, crawling in and out of a wet tent is no better than roasting in it when the temperatures hit over 30 degrees. Not sure which is worse.

La Asturiana Surfschool

Our daily activity of going to surf school was fun and so exhausting! I absolutely love surfing, and was so happy to be on the sea for five days in a row. We realised that having a surf school to go to every day gave us a bit of structure to our freedom, and allowed us to relax guilt-free for the rest of the day.

Surfing is a very physically demanding sport, as even getting into the chest-deep water requires a lot of effort when waves keep coming at you and pushing back to shore. Nevertheless, it was loads of fun! Even though I've been to surf school several times before, I have managed to learn turns, and build up on my stand-up technique.

It was great doing something different on our travels, and this week will stay with us, through the memories of the fun afternoons and achy muscles the next day.
